You’ve probably seen the ratings on motor oil in the past, and your owner’s manual tells you which you should buy for your vehicle, but what do these ratings actually mean?

Motor oil is designed to lubricate the moving parts in an engine so they won’t grind against each other and wear out. The challenge is to do that at very cold temperatures and also at very hot temperatures. The first number in a viscosity rating like 10W-30 measures how thick the oil is at 0°F, and the second number is the viscosity of the motor oil at 212°F. Every engine is designed with a particular viscosity rating in mind.
