Winter Driving Tips

Winter Tire

In Bedford and Londonderry, winter weather can pose many challenges for drivers. Fortunately, there are a few steps that you can take to be as prepared as possible for cold and inclement weather. The team at Tulley BMW of Manchester has created this guide featuring winter driving tips, tips for driving in snow, and how to get your vehicle ready for the season.

Tips for Driving During Winter

Slick Auburn roads can be quite dangerous, but there are steps you can take to minimize the risk. Explore these tips for driving in snow and more below.

  • Stay home if you can. Only head out if it’s absolutely necessary.
  • One of the most important tips for driving in snow is to drive slowly. There is less traction on the roads, so you need to adjust your speed to accommodate that.
  • Increase your following distance. Extend the time to approximately 8-10 seconds.
  • Don’t power up when driving on hills because it can cause your wheels to spin.
  • Do not use cruise control.
  • Keep a full tank of gas, or have your vehicle fully charged before heading out.
  • Keep a bag of sand or cat litter in your vehicle. Putting sand or litter under the drive tires can help in the event your vehicle gets stuck. Next, straighten the wheels and accelerate slowly.

Winter Car Care

Not only should you follow the winter driving tips listed above, but you should also make sure your vehicle is ready for the change in seasons. Perform these tasks right at home, or leave them to the experts at the Tulley BMW of Manchester service center

  • Test your battery: Colder temperatures can lead to a decrease in battery power.
  • Check tire pressure: Colder temperatures can also cause a drop in tire pressure.
  • Swap out wiper fluid: It is recommended that you choose a wiper fluid that is rated for -30 degrees.
  • Inspect wiper blades: If they are worn or damaged, they should be replaced.
  • Prepare or purchase a winter car emergency kit: See what should be included in this helpful guide.
  • Opt for winter tires if you can: If you do not plan on purchasing winter tires and you have all-season tires, make sure that the tread depth on your all-season tires is more than 2/32 of an inch.
