Why is My Steering Wheel Shaking?

2020 BMW X3 Dash

Why is my steering wheel shaking? This issue could be caused by a number of culprits, but the most common is improper alignment of your tires. When tires become imbalanced, the wheels can cause vibration in the steering wheel, and possibly the entire car as a whole. Wheel alignment is far from the only cause, however. Learn more about other possible issues that can cause a shaking steering wheel in this guide from Tulley BMW of Manchester

My Steering Wheel Shakes – What Can I Do?

  • Imbalanced wheels: The weight placement of your tires is important, and when there isn’t even weight distribution, vibration can occur. This is more common for vehicles outfitted with lightweight suspension systems. If you do not get the wheels balanced, it can also cause problems with the shocks, struts, and other steering components. Set up an appointment for a wheel balance today.
  • Misalignment: Improper positioning of your vehicle’s wheels can also lead to a vibrating steering wheel. If possible, try to avoid driving over obstacles like railroad tracks and potholes around Bedford and Londonderry.
  • Bad bearings: If bearings are damaged or not properly lubricated, increased friction can cause shaking in your steering wheel. You will only notice this issue when turning. Having the bearings cleaned may help, but if they are damaged, they will need to be replaced.
  • Suspension issues: Your suspension could also be the culprit. Don’t put off this simple fix, or it could lead to more damage down the road.
  • Brake issues: If the steering wheel shakes when you try to slow the vehicle down, your brakes could be the issue. Worn brake pads, defective brake discs, and even worn shocks can be the cause.
