The first method is to be used when you already have a working key but want to program additional keys. The second method should be used to program your BMW key fob when you do not already have a working key.

Programming Additional BMW Key Fobs

Do you already have a working BMW key fob? Here is how you can program additional fobs if you’d like to have a spare or two.

  1. Step inside your BMW with the working key fob as well as the ones you want to program. Make sure all doors and windows are closed.
  2. Put the working key into the ignition and turn it to position 1 (do not start the engine). When you do this, the dashboard lights and accessories should turn on.
  3. Turn the key back and remove the key from the ignition.
  4. Take the key that has already been previously programmed and hold down the unlock button while pressing the lock button (the BMW logo) 3 times. When you let go of the unlock button, the doors should lock and unlock automatically.
  5. Take the new key you want to program and hold down the unlock button while pressing the BMW logo 3 times. Once again, when then release the unlock button, the doors will lock and unlock once more. This signals that your new BMW key fob has been programmed.

If you do not have a BMW key fob that is programmed to work with your vehicle, here are the steps you need to follow.

  1. Insert key into the ignition and quickly turn it to position 1 and back 5 times.
  2. Take the key out of the ignition.
  3. Hold the unlock button and press the BMW logo 3 times. You are then able to release the unlock button.
  4. If you would now like to program additional BMW key fobs, simply repeat step 3 within 30 seconds from the original key programming.
  5. To complete the programming process, turn on the ignition.
