How to Check Brake Fluid

Mechanic checking brake fluid

Brakes are a critical component of your vehicle, which is why it is so important that the brake system operates properly on the roads of Bedford and beyond. There are several ways to keep tabs on the performance of your brakes, once of which is to check your brake fluid regularly. Wondering how to check brake fluid? It’s actually quite simple. Tulley BMW of Manchester has provided a guide to brake fluid below.

What is Brake Fluid?

Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid that helps with the movement of the brake pedal. Additionally, it prevents the brake system from corroding and keeps it lubricated. For most vehicles in the Londonderry area, brake fluid is glycol-ether based. However, there are also silicone-based (DOT-5) and mineral oil-based (LHM) brake fluids on the market as well. Not sure which type of brake fluid your particular make and model requires? That’s ok! You can find this information in your owner’s manual.

How to Check Brake Fluid in 3 Easy Steps

  1. Find the brake fluid reservoir on the master cylinder under the hood. If you are not sure where this is located, consult your owner’s manual.
  2. The outside of the brake fluid reservoir should feature “minimum” and “maximum” lines. See where the brake fluid falls between these lines. If the brake fluid is closer to the minimum line, brake service or a brake fluid replacement is likely required.
  3. What color is brake fluid? Check the appearance of the fluid in addition to the level. If it’s dark brown or black and has an oil-like appearance, you will also need a brake fluid flush.

Does Brake Fluid Need to Be Changed?

Yes, brake fluid will eventually need to be changed. Here’s why:

  • Brake fluid attracts moisture, which can lead to the corrosion of your brake system.
  • Brake fluid accumulates contaminants over time, which can damage brake-related systems.
  • Systems like ABS and traction control generate heat when they activate, causing the brake fluid to wear down more rapidly.

What Color is Brake Fluid?

New brake fluid should be nearly clear with a yellowish tint. As you use your brakes, this fluid starts to break down and pick up contaminants. As mentioned above, if your brake fluid starts to look more like motor oil, the performance of your brake system will be adversely affected.

When is Brake Fluid Service Needed?

Brake fluid can last approximately four to five years, but it is a good idea to check your brake fluid on a regular basis. Your driving habits can affect how long your brake fluid will last. Checking your brake fluid at least once a year is highly recommended.
