What is the Recommended BMW Tire Pressure?

Close up of tire tread

The recommended tire pressure for most BMW models is 32 PSI (pounds per square inch), but you should confirm by checking the sticker on the inside edge of the driver’s door, or check your owner’s manual. If you’re taking a trip out of Bedford or running errands in Londonderry, it’s important that your BMW has the correct tire pressure. Why Proper Tire Pressure is Important

Properly inflated tires on your BMW can:

  1. Help reduce the risk of flat tires and blowouts.
  2. Help extend the life of your tires by reducing wheel spin and excess friction.
  3. Improve fuel efficiency up to 3.3% according to the Department of Energy.

How to Check Tire Pressure

Most BMW models have a tire pressure monitor on the dashboard to alert you if the pressure is low. You’ll get a more accurate reading if you check the pressure when the tires are cold–not immediately after the car has been driven. Follow these steps for checking the tire air pressure:

  1. Unscrew the valve stem cap and put it somewhere safe.
  2. Place a tire gauge onto the valve stem and firmly press down.
  3. The gauge will display the PSI. If it right around the 32 mark, you are good.
  4. Remove the gauge.
  5. If you have more than the recommended PSI, let some of the air out by pressing down the center plunger in the valve stem, and recheck.
  6. If the PSI is below what’s recommended, add enough air to bring it up to the recommended level.
  7. Replace the valve stem cap.

You can fill your tires at home with a car tire pump or even with a bike pump, or you can go to a gas station or service center. Don’t forget to check your BMW spare tire every 6 months to a year.

Tire Care Tips

  1. Visually inspect your tires on a regular basis for tread wear or cracks in the sidewalls.
  2. If your tires regularly lose air pressure, it could be a slow leak that should be addressed immediately.
  3. Keep up to date with the recommended tire rotation and wheel alignment schedule in your BMW owner’s manual maintenance schedule
  4. If the outside temperature drops quickly, your tire pressure will drop as well, and the warning light may go on. Add air at your earliest convenience when this happens.
