How Long Does it Take to Charge an Electric Car?

2019 BMW i3

If you are looking for a vehicle with a smaller carbon footprint, you may be interested in making the switch to a fully-electric vehicle. EVs are rapidly growing in popularity, allowing many Bedford drivers to no longer have to worry about rising gas prices. If you have been contemplating EV ownership, you likely have also been wondering about EV charging time. How long does it take to charge an electric vehicle? Electric car charging time varies based on several factors.

Electric Car Charging Options

Currently, there are three main electric car charging options available for Londonderry drivers.

  1. Domestic Outlet Home Charging (Regular Outlet): A normal grounded (three-prong) 110V/120V charging outlet (Level 1 Charging) is the slowest option but also the most convenient. Level 1 charging usually takes around 24 hours or more for a full charge.
  2. Installed Brand-Approved Domestic Charging: A Level 2 charging station uses rapid (usually 240V+) chargers and can be installed by an electrician in your garage. DC fast chargers are also common, and with this type, it’s possible to obtain an 80% charge in half an hour or forty minutes. Keep in mind that the last 20% will take longer as there’s a diminishing rate of charging speed.
  3. Public Charging: There are also plenty of public charging stations in Auburn and beyond, and more are being added all of the time. These charging stations vary in type and speed but often provide Level 2 charging speeds for greater convenience. Some public chargers even use renewable energy sources.

EV Charging Time by Level

Electric car charging time varies based on level.

  • Level 1 EV charging often takes days to fully charge an electric car.
  • Level 2 EV charging takes hours to fully charge an electric car.
  • Level 3 EV charging can fully recharge most EVs in an hour or less. A significant range can be added in as little as ten minutes.
